I Think It’s Called “Lin Kok” (In Cantonese)

Look what I was given today!

For those of you who read Heri’s blog ( Hi Heri! =D ), you will know that Heri blogged about seeing these things in a supermarket recently.  According to Heri’s research, they’re a type of water chestnut.  I don’t know much about them, but I’ve been told they’re called “lin kok” in Cantonese.

I knew I’d had them before but they hadn’t left much impression on me.  So I was quite pleased to be given some today (already cooked) so I could reacquaint myself with their taste.

The outer shell was a lot harder than I’d remembered; I had to chop it open with a small knife.  Inside was some white flesh.

This is the inside, the bit you eat, with the shell peeled off.  It still didn’t taste like much to me upon eating it this time, but it did have a little water chestnut flavour although actually it tasted like a chinese banquet to me.  You know how the dishes served at a chinese banquet all taste the same by the time you get to the 7th dish (normally something like stewed sea cucumber and mushrooms on a bed of greens)?  This tasted like that but it had a nutty, more dense texture as compared to water chestnuts.

So that’s my little bull’s horn chestnut story.

Tonight I was meant to go for a mid autumn festival dinner but at last minute I opted out of it and stayed home.  This is because I am sick with worry over the really hectic week I have ahead, which incidentally starts off with a horrendous all-day meeting tomorrow.  I feel ill just thinking about it =(

In the end I made myself some buttermilk pancakes because I really felt like something stodgy-ish to cheer myself up with.  I must say this pancake recipe is really good; the pancakes were fluffy and tasty, and even nicer with butter and blueberry jam.

So I celebrated my mid autumn festival with pancakes.  But I think it’s okay because pancakes are round!  Like the moon!  =D

GM went off to the dinner without me but he brought me loads of food back, including some mooncakes so I had some to cheer myself up.  I like mooncakes these days, esp the kind with the egg.  Mmm.

I was even given a pandan one!  I haven’t had it yet.  I think green tea mooncakes should be very nice, they should sell those here.  I bet they sell them in Asia.

Okay wish me luck for the horrible week ahead =(
